JBL Live 660 NC Wireless Headphones: Features, Benefits and Buying Guide

The JBL Live 660 NC wireless headphones are designed for listeners who want immersive sound, active noise cancellation and comfortable wireless listening without constantly worrying about battery life. Combining JBL Signature Sound with 40mm drivers, Adaptive Noise Cancelling, Ambient Aware technology and up to 50 hours of playback, they are suited to commuting, travel, work, study and everyday entertainment.

Although the JBL Live 660 NC has since been replaced by the newer JBL Live 670NC in JBL’s product range, the 660 NC remains an appealing option when available at a competitive price. Independent testing also describes it as a mid-range over-ear headphone suitable for casual listening, office use and commuting.

What Are JBL Live 660 NC Wireless Headphones?

Over-Ear Wireless Headphones for Everyday Listening

The JBL Live 660 NC is an over-ear wireless headphone featuring 40mm dynamic drivers and JBL Signature Sound. Its frequency response is specified at 16Hz–20kHz, while the headphones use Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless connectivity.

The over-ear construction is designed to surround the ears rather than sit directly on them. This can make the headphones comfortable for extended listening, particularly when combined with the soft ear cushions and fabric headband.

At approximately 265 grams, the Live 660 NC is relatively substantial compared with lightweight earbuds, but its padded construction is designed for longer listening sessions.

Key Features of the JBL Live 660 NC

Adaptive Noise Cancelling

One of the biggest attractions of the JBL Live 660 NC is its Adaptive Noise Cancelling (ANC). The technology is designed to reduce unwanted environmental noise so you can concentrate more easily on your audio.

This can be particularly useful when travelling, working in busy environments or commuting on public transport. Noise cancellation is not complete sound isolation, however, and performance can vary depending on the surrounding environment and the type of noise present.

Ambient Aware and TalkThru

Not every situation calls for maximum noise cancellation. JBL therefore includes Ambient Aware, which increases awareness of surrounding sounds, and TalkThru, which reduces music volume and amplifies speech so you can communicate without taking the headphones off.

These modes make the headphones more practical for everyday use because you can move between immersive listening and environmental awareness without repeatedly removing the headset.

JBL Signature Sound and Customisation

40mm Dynamic Drivers

The JBL Live 660 NC uses 40mm drivers designed to deliver JBL Signature Sound with an emphasis on a powerful, engaging presentation.

The sound can also be personalised through the My JBL Headphones app. Users can adjust EQ settings and customise features such as Smart Ambient settings and voice-assistant preferences.

This is useful if you prefer to adjust the sound depending on what you are listening to. Music, podcasts and films can all benefit from different sound preferences.

Battery Life and Charging

Up to 50 Hours of Playback

Battery life is a major strength of the JBL Live 660 NC. JBL rates the headphones for up to 50 hours of music playback with Bluetooth enabled and ANC switched off, or up to 40 hours with ANC and Bluetooth enabled.

A full charge takes approximately two hours. JBL also states that a 10-minute quick charge can provide up to four additional hours of listening, making the feature useful when you need to leave the house quickly.

Actual battery life will vary depending on settings, volume and usage conditions, so the advertised figures should be treated as maximum rated performance rather than a guaranteed everyday result.

Connectivity and Smart Features

Bluetooth Multipoint

The JBL Live 660 NC supports Multi-Point Connection, allowing compatible devices to be switched between without repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting. For example, you can listen to a video on a tablet and then take a call from your phone.

The headphones also support Google Fast Pair for compatible Android devices, simplifying the initial pairing process. Voice assistant integration provides another convenient way to interact with supported features.

Automatic Play and Pause

Another useful feature is automatic play and pause. When you remove the headphones, playback can automatically pause, then resume when you put them back on.

This small convenience can make a noticeable difference when you frequently switch between listening and conversations.

Calls and Voice Features

Built-In Microphones

The JBL Live 660 NC includes built-in microphones for hands-free calls. JBL also provides VoiceAware, allowing users to control how much of their own voice they hear during calls.

This makes the headphones suitable for more than entertainment. They can also be used for phone calls, online meetings and other everyday communication.

What to Consider Before Buying

The Model’s Age

The biggest consideration is that the JBL Live 660 NC is an older model and has been replaced by the JBL Live 670NC.

That does not automatically make the 660 NC a poor choice. If you find it at a significantly reduced price, its combination of ANC, long battery life and wireless features can still represent good value.

However, buyers should compare its price against newer JBL headphones before purchasing. A newer model may provide longer software support, updated connectivity or other improvements that justify a higher price.

Comfort and Fit

The headphones have soft ear cushions and a fabric headband designed for comfort, but fit remains personal. People with different head sizes or preferences may find over-ear headphones more or less comfortable than earbuds or lighter on-ear alternatives.

If possible, consider the intended listening duration and whether you prefer a larger over-ear design.

Final Thoughts

Their 40mm drivers, Ambient Aware and TalkThru modes, Multi-Point Connection and app support make them versatile for music, travel, work and everyday listening.

Because the model has been replaced by the JBL Live 670NC, the most important buying consideration is price.
